Why do people always assume that someone is making things up when they talk about something terrible that happened in their lives?

Coz they don’t want to hear the bitter truth

Regardless, they're in denial. They don't want to believe such terrible things exist in life.

Because some people come from pink fluff and can’t conceive of the horrors of reality. Plus they lack empathy.

Speaking for myself, the only reason I would, would be if the person had already been caught lying or exaggerating. Otherwise I’d have no reason not to believe them.

I don't. If anything, I probably believe people too much.
