@February: A threat of suicide is a cry for help. Maybe he suffered from depression, or another mental illness, and never got help for it.

@AbbeyRhode: he did actually but until his death his family had to tiptoe around him, giving in to his every need. He had everyone terrified, including his son.

He tried something every time someone advised him to take charge or clean his acts. He had no mental illness.
