Do you add people before messaging them?

I really don't know why people add me before chatting with me. Can we chat first to at least see if you adding me would be a waste or not? Lol

Sometimes. Following them is also a way to see what else they have to say. Also following is a way to bookmark a conversation for later look-see. Usually I give them a courtesy message, but not always.
