I have never found it necessary to pay, but those friends of mine who DO pay, do so to maintain their independence as upwardly mobile, entrepreneurial business women.

Yes, absolutely so. For them, paying bridges a gap. Paying means to be obliged to no one. Paying means to be beholding to no person. And paying is defining an equal exchange for a perceived value in a service or function of which has no inherent value unto itself.
When my friends pay, they are released from saying 'thanks' and paying acknowledges their release from future expectations of others. Their entrepreneurial success is therefore self-measured by how much they pay versus their perception of what they received out if it all.
