Goes to show how little I actually paid attention on here

Someone on here said an old member pretended to have cancer for attention and I had no idea ..... that's actually sad...I don't get being angry at them I just feel pity for them that they felt they needed to go so far for attention...something was obviously missing from their life ...I hope they found it . Same with the others...

I know who you mean and it is very sad. I was actually a close DM buddy with them back in the day, and cancer was a part of the script. Which at the time I didn’t know was a script, I found that out well after they left. But like you, not angry. Maybe because I never let our communication get to a level where I felt manipulated or quite honestly, personally invested.

Perhaps because I’d come from a site where a popular user, around for years, cultivated many friends and admirers, actually faked their own death from cancer. And I mean faked to the point that they had an “attorney” contact several of those friends via email to let them know they were in the person’s will. One was supposedly at the airport, waiting to fly out for a group meeting with this attorney, when they discovered the whole thing was a scam. Lol….. for all I know that person was a part of the scam too.

Don’t even remember how it was uncovered, it was a long time ago. But let’s just say there’s not much I hear online that I don’t take with a very large grain of salt. And part of the reason why I don’t do much DMing these days.
@OlderSometimesWiser We interacted on posts but we weren't close . Was that person with the will from Ep too ...I was only somewhat close with very few for that reason too .
@Chern0bylplaygr0unds Nope, not EP. Apparently I’m one of about ten people who didn’t migrate here from EP.

I remember her smh. I didn't know she did that till someone told me.
@BluntSm0ker I knew about the others but not the cancer thing
I think I have a special niche for a version of this. Years ago now I have acted as an online midwife. Twice.

I knew it was probably some kind of prank, but what if it wasn’t? What if some poor abandoned soul was ACTUALLY delivering a baby solo?

At any rate, I have two internet births on my resume and serious gullibility points.
@Mamapolo2016 I think we all are in some way
@Chern0bylplaygr0unds The bad side of that coin is the inability to believe others. Truth is, as much as I feel an idiot, I would still stay with someone for hours who claimed to be in dire straits.

It may be as simple as the fact that I have experienced pain and loneliness and someone’s comfort and hope can snag me pretty easily. Alone in an emergency is the loneliest place to be.
@Mamapolo2016 you're very kind and it seems genuine which is rare these days

Yeah I've heard stories like that . I admire your heart's well wishes!!! Not everyone can see past behavior to the root of the problem.
@Mindful oh I've done that too ...or I'll post stuff then delete ...I choose to journal not online ...I feel it's kind of risky posting personal stuff on here ...always someone trying to use your vulnerabilities as a way in ...it's gross but happens and it happened to me so I'm trying to be way more careful...

@Chern0bylplaygr0unds re:taking advantage. I've been thru the gamut here. I've decided that the best way to keep things above board for all parties is to keep it "public" posts. Journaling: I think you're being wise and I'm being lazy. Sigh. Do you imagine God reads your journals? I find it comforting here to get at least one view or heart. It makes me feel I'm not alone in my thoughts. So I'm needy that way.
@Mindful I understand wanting to.be seen, understood and heard ... you're not being needy you are being human ...

I think the black hole of emptiness that would drive someone to use the cancer card in that way goes beyond attention. I wander around here pretty oblivious, but if I’m wishing someone well for a condition they don’t have to soothe one they do, I can’t really say I mind. I do understand why it would upset some folks though. There’s a reason it was the likeliest tool to fill the hole. Sad business all around, but we do see all sides of humanity here.
@JustNik that's true ... there are many perspectives

Thank you for the non judgemental attitude and empathy. 🤗 So many vilified them.

But, on a side note: I am hardcore about solid legit evidence proven and not just word of mouth and rumors.
@Magenta I have never been a fan of the mob mentality of this place tbh . There are reasons people do what they do that some couldn't even begin to understand. None of us are perfect either ...including me ...

@Chern0bylplaygr0unds I detest that mob mentality.

Indeed.

My best guess is that they’re starved for attention and they don’t get any in real life, so making up stories helps them obtain attention from strangers. It’s a little messed up though, their mental health is probably not doing well.
@Younameit probably not ...I feel sad for them ..I suppose

@Younameit I'm slow witted at times. I've had trouble identifying some of these liars in the past. I can see where someone tells stories to get attention and probably bends the truth ... I think to myself...hopefully it's not outright lying. But these news stories tell otherwise. Your logic that it's for attention and that they are mentally unwell makes sense.
