My advice is to get to know people on public comment threads first, and move slowly with the in-box. Only add friends once you've gotten to know people publicly--and sometimes it's also helpful to see if they are friends with, or interact with, others you've gotten to know and trust.
If you are offended by content people share, just block or mute them. It's a small site, social media wise, but I've made many good friends here.

@Harmonium1923 thank you so much! Those all sound like really good tips to me lol. I taught high school level English for years, but this past year was my first teaching at the middle school level so that was something, lol.
