So what's this place like? What's the good and the bad? Waiting to see if this is worth my time before investing too much time.

Do you prefer chaotic freedom or safe authoritarianism? If it's the former, this is the place for you. If it's the latter, this is not the place for you. You will encounter many people who do not like you, and it will be impossible to change their opinions. You will also encounter many people who will love you no matter what, and you will be unable to do or say anything that changes their minds, either. And those people who just treat you with decency, at least you will know that they do so authentically, as they're hardly compelled by any particular leadership.
