I can say population density is not even. Some places have lesser people living in them, while others have rarely anyone around. Take for example Australia. Australia has a total population around 24 million, but around 19 million of which live in 4 major capital cities. Rest are spread all over the place. So those capital cities get over-crowded. Example, Melbourne and Sydney.

If you spread them all over the Australian land, your hardly see any crowd, but the fact is, major portion of Australian land is covered with desert, so people live along the green habitable patches.
