What do you think of dumpster diving?

I just watched a documentary about freeganism, for those who don't know what that it, Its a group of people who are against wasting and capitalism, so they dive dumpers for free food and clothing. I personally wouldn't do it. Supermarkets throw away the food that expired, I don't support freeganism. I think people should ear less and buy their food.

I don't know about freeganism. The folks who dumpster dive around here are usually homeless. Supermarkets here give all their "wasted" food (ie stale bread/pastries, soon to expire dairy/eggs) to the local food charity who distribute it to the food and homeless of the area.
I've worked for many supermarkets. Yes, they do throw out a lot of product -
contaminated product and well out-of-code product (cans, boxes). ALL contaminated product is thrown directly into the trash (all out-of-code liquid dairy is poured down the drain). Product that is slightly out of code its either marked down for quick sale or is given to the local food charity But to discourage people from taking it, they use trash compactors. NO chemical (ie cleaners) or medical products (ie aspirins/cold remedies) are donated, put into the trash or poured down the drain, but are sent to a hazardous waste facility to be disposed of properly).
Some stores even donate left over holiday product to the food charity a few weeks after the holiday. (It's all perfectly good products, it's just that they need the room to display the next holiday/event's product)

hi Cougarmilf
I have an 800 year old oak panel wall in my house due to dumpster diving!
Best wishes
:)

@sogdianrock: I'm not against furniture! I'm saying people should not eat garbage

hi Cougarmilf
well if perfectly good food is thrown away and is safe due to being well wrapped then who am I to tell a hungry person to desist?

They are against capitalism? They wouldn't be able to eat garbage without it.
Once it hits the dumpster its off limits for me.....rats bugs maggots...yuck
I know Panera bread at the end of the night gives the bread to organizations.

I am way too much into cleanliness to ever even reach into a dumpster.
Our dumpsters are locked inside a fenced in area. Its called garbage for a reason. The supermarkets here give day old bakery and wilted produce to the areas soup kitchen and another place that gives groceries to people in need. It is a good system and a shame county managers everywhere are not doing this.

I lived in university apartments and students would move after semesters and some (moving home or overseas) would leave everything and much of it in boxes next to the dumpsters for others to take

@cherokeepatti: I support that, but I don't support diving for food. It could cause health problems
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Cougarmilf: could, you never know why the food was discarded either. I kept what stuff I needed and cleaned up and saved the rest for other students that moved in...some really appreciated it.

it would be difficult for me
even though I've known " very poor" firsthand
my need has never been greater than my silly pride/dignity
now please don't attack me for saying that last bit

I have no issue with it. It's better than having that food wasted. That annoys me more, how wasteful we are.
Jentlemen · 46-50, M
They are scavengers. Living off the grid is something different and lot more dignified.I did it few years back

it doesn't sound like a very appealing life to me
