Yes. How on earth can you not understand the distinction?

@TyphoidJerry: Both are racial slurs and used to insult one based on race

Okay... well first off white trash is a class thing more than a race thing. It's about poor people in trailer parks. If you actually really think about the term, it specifies white because white people usually -aren't- the poor people. You couldn't call Mark Zuckerberg white trash, dude is an Ivy League billionaire. You could call him a cracker though.

So cracker is a bonafide racial slur for white people. But... does it hurt? Do you feel like it's the most hateful thing someone can say to you? Did your parents have the cracker talk with you? Probably not. The word has no power. It's an insult that's not insulting.

Racial slurs about white people don't mean anything because the system of racism puts us at the top. Same reason I don't know any good white people jokes, or don't know what a racist caricature of a white person looks like.

And white trash -can- actually hurt someone's feelings... but it'd be because they're poor. Not white. Social power. see how it works?

@TyphoidJerry: system of racism? and rich black people are not usually refereed to as niggers its more the lower class ghetto gang ridden that the term is most used against

Sure they do. Obviously you get it worse if you're poor, but it affects everyone who is black.

"Systems" of culture are a sociology thing. The idea is that we have rules, values, and ideas we're all raised with that teach us things. One of them is how races are different. And even if you never consciously think it, we will still behave like blacks are inferior to whites.

And this bears out in all sorts of evidence, observed data or experimental. It's provable that black people are treated worse than white people in almost every conceivable way. And most of the time it's not intentional.

We're trying to fix that as a society. And that means do the easy stuff first - don't say the n-word. And because we're white, we don't get why it hurts. Fuck is offensive, but that's fine. It just offends people. The n-word cuts deep because it asserts social order and dominance. And we don't understand what that means because we have no equivalent. So we just have to read and listen.
