Why do people care so much about flags?

Flags are representations of allegiance. I.e: teams. Humans are naturally "us vs them" minded. This is why war has played such a huge role in our past. And present. And future. Its why different countries exist, despite being on the overall same "team", that being "human".

Its why people have died at sports events, brawls erupting when someone says some shit about the other's sports team.

In effect, this guy is showing hos loyatly to his "team", as means to solidify his status in that team: which confers various benefits.

@IrretrievableObito: He cares too much about a piece of cloth.
@IrretrievableObito: It may not bolster my point, but it undeniably true.

@thatscottishguy: It's not so much the cloth as what the cloth represents. Granted, I do see the irony of being worried about a piece of cloth on the ground. I forget exactly, but i think the American flag touching the ground symbolizes defeat. Sometime in the civil war, maybe, they came up with that arbitrary-seeming-rule, as a means to say, "America will never fall". In essence, it's just social ettiqute.

But, the cloth is representative of America. It's like some personal effect you may have that you are sentimental about, if you have anything like tgat. Something your mom or dad gave you, a best friend, a lover. You probably wouldn't want it being damaged or someone disrespecting it, right? Idrc, but just explaining the reasoning behind it. Because there is reasoning. Even if it's stupid. But, sentimentality comes from the heart, not the brain.

No point in disrespecting cloth or caring if someone does.
