When did telling a depressed person to cheer up actually cheered them up?

Never, however people should realise that they don't have "diagnosed with depression" written on their forehead so most people will just assume you're just sad or overreacting. I would say to lighten up and not take things to heart but to someone truly depressed i don't think that's an option they can't avoid thinking like that :/
