Why is Middle America so addicted to opiates?

West Virginia has the highest rate of overdose death out of any state. What's wrong with this country?

Its an epidemic that is sweeping the nation. Heroin and other drugs have creeped its way into my hometown and every small town in America. There are a lot to blame for this, such as our economy, big pharma, demographics, unemployment...and more. Its sad really, and until people unite as a nation (which is most unlikely, but plausible) it will continue to happen. It's hitting very close to home all over the country. Its not just in the streets anymore but in homes across America.

@MamaButterfly: That's also part of the problem. People used to think of drug addiction as being a "big city" problem, but that's far from the case now. Small town America is no longer the "escape" from the problems of the cities. In many cases, the problems there are even worse.
@RileyPancake: Exactly. Where I live, it is rapidly on the rise and there have many drug related deaths in my area and I live far from the city. Its affecting rural America everyday.
