I think it's a sign of the times. People are so unhappy with how the world is going, many can't afford their most basic needs so they are "medicating" to numb it all out.馃

@Peaches: I think is true, as well. "Societal sickness", you might call it. It's a general malaise. Should also note that many of the areas fraught with opioid addiction are poor working class areas, including places that were once more prosperous, and declined after manufacturing in the U.S. declined.
