The US has purposely been destabilizing different parts of the ME, both aggressively and passive aggressively to insure the continued usefulness of the petrodollar. The current arrangements with the Saudis is a continuation of that process. As far back as Roosevelt, it was known by the 'puppeteers' that the US would always benefit from a cooperative relationship with the royals.
