Why do people like people that hurt them with the truth? My friends said they respect me for hurting them with the truth.

Well I don't wanna mean. Wheb someone asks me for an honest answer, I will tell it like it is, even if they don't wanna hear it. I rather tell someone what they NEED to hear. My friends respect me more when I'm straightfoward with them. I just don't like lying. I'm not saying I'm ungrateful but I was just curious.
