My theory has always been that our favorite things are tied to pleasant memories and feelings. Like our favorite foods remind us of family, or our favorite movies remind us of our childhood, our favorite colors of things we like, etc. I can't really prove it, but there may be a hint of truth to it.

@InvaderNice: as in why do we pick one thing in a category of things and decide that's our favourite . For example strawberries or bananas as your favourite fruit out if thousands if fruit types .
