What is the purpose of having friends on sw?

So far I dont see why people can be added

I filter my feed so I see posts from just my friends, I can read these first before I read others. Also, only friends can PM me, everyone else goes into an others folder.

@Dreammmer: I may read them eventually. It filters out a lot of the nonsense
