How many chances do you give a person until you give up on them?

My boss would say Zero, because after working for him for almost 3 years and never missing a day, or ever being late, the 1st time I legit got sick and told him how sick I was a day and a half a head of time, he said "either you show up or you're fired."

That's brutal for a boss it would have been cool if it was contagious and it affected him.
