Sleeping pills are often addictive (sometimes only psychologically, but that's hardly better). Their efficacy also drops as you take them for extended periods of time, and high doses sometimes lead to liver damage.

i medicated with diphenhydramine for a while too. I built up a tolerance and got to a point where i would take 500mg right after waking up ironically just to get me through the day. Idk about you but i started having shit short term memory and would feel brain fog. Trying to taper off all that is pretty hard so be careful i guess.
Dr's used to know that the patient knows whats best for them, this whole painkiller "epidemic" has put Doc's on the defence and afraid of scripting almost anything lately. Sad but true.
