it is often used to justify horrendous deeds against other national groups

I think it's more important to note why it is nonsensical. You wouldn't say that you're proud to be 6'5 or that you're proud to have a predisposition for diabetes. It's a genetic accident. Pride should be reserved for things you obtain on your own, not because of something that happens by accident of birth, or not over something that was achieved by someone else. I never quite understood national or ethnic pride; being proud to be Italian, Irish, American, etc etc. We had absolutely no part in beating the French or composing the deceleration of independence.
I also refuse to spout this liberal rap that it is culpable for everything and that it is intrinsically evil or bad. It isn't. Sure, this country has enough pride, and it does foment many wars, but there are pros to national pride as well, If I may turn the table.
Here's a quote to ponder: "To achieve world government, it is necessary to remove from the minds of men their individualism, loyalty to family tradition, national patriotism, and religious dogmas." - Brock Chrisholm, Director general of the world health organization.
When national pride is diminished, globalization is much easier to be attained.
Don't trust neoliberals, just as much as you wouldn't trust neocons.
Hillary Clinton said that her dream is a “hemispheric common market”. People like her, George Sorors, Mark Zuckerberg and most in the elite class want an undifferentiated global population; raceless, genderless, identityless meaningless population consuming sugar and drugs while watching porn on VR goggles while they max out their credit card. They want a one world economic market and a one world religion for them to manipulate.

Why have Gay pride? That isn't a choice... it's about what it means to the person, the bearing it has had on their life, the memories they associate with it. Ok, it's maybe not a perfect analogy but you can certainly have pride in where you're from without it being a negative thing. In moderation of course, and with the knowledge that someone from another country has just as much pride in theirs and it isn't a contest.

@Shadowstep: The protesters are/were doing more polluting than the backhoes! This is a hypocrisy free zone!

@puck61: so you're willing to demolish land to build a pipe?
@Shadowstep: That's hyperbole. People are generally protesting for their own entertainment anyway. It's like a party, and people feel the camaraderie and selfish altruism and have a perceived reason to misbehave. It isn't going to "destroy the land" and "poison the watershed". It's necessary, and there are always risks, but there's no need for dramatics.

It isn't, loving your country is fine- hating anyone else's is not. The problems come when people mistake one for the other. Both the people professing national pride, and the ones who observe it and make negative connotations.

Nothing wrong with some National pride, as long as you can still think critically.

@EasyAndSlutty: why?

It's not, what's bad is people tend to try and rationalize hate and fear with it.
The solution is to get rid of all humans and replace them with smooth sentient river rocks

Sometimes people who are patriotic forget that everyone else in the world loves his own country, too.
That's just a neo-liberal thing. It isn't. They remain under the delusion that they represent a majority, but they are more like bacteria. Very small but potentially very dangerous. The people who refuse to stand up to them are equally dangerous.
