A strong core looks good on both guys and girls and its a really good thing to have for yourself, too. I'm just pretty much in favor of them, but don't neglect the lower back muscles.

Its not rocket science, hon, and vanity aside, especially if you're a big guy, your back will thank you in a few years if you don't neglect your abs, lower back, and even your obliques.
Crunches and leg raises are a good way to start and while I'm hardly an expert, I can tell you its pretty easy to feel the results after you start doing them regularly.
