Is it just me or did this guy misinterpret me? I didn't think I was being rude.

No you were not rude. He was. No one has the right to be demanding or expecting anything especially online, unless that is a established relationship you already have with him/her. Which obviously you did not have. I'd block him just to make sure he doesn't contact you again
