So this is what I have to deal with just because im black?

I went to temp at a practice they told me it was orthodontic treatment and this guy is super fast but I shouldn't worry too much as this guy hardly wants help.
Anyways, he comes in and I see he gives me the once over. He asks me if I've done orthodontic treatment before and I tell him yes I worked at ... hospital, he rares his eyebrows. He later asks me where I'm from, I say born and bred in London. He says no your family so I say Jamaica.
He then says oh I've been there before about 4 years ago. So I say oh really where abouts but he's sort of delaying a response. He mentions montego bay and traveling through the mountains to Kingston. So I said wow your very brave.
He then says.... yea where are your grandparents from so I say the areas and then he starts telling me on that islands east so I correct him and say no they're all in Jamaica but in the country.
Annoyed with me correcting him GE starts asking me, oh and do you know where your families orginially from in Africa so I said oh your talking about my ancestors, the patient walks in and he says fascinating that whole situation of how they came to those island in the Caribbean.
I then said where are you from? He said ahhh Brisbane, can't you catch the accent?
I said I don't like to presume.
I said interesting you know about the natives there you know the Aboriginal people they've pretty much been reduced to a marginal section of their land.
He shut up. For the rest of the day.
I was still courteous to him throughout the day as I would be with anyone.
But the nerve of this guy.
Why are such professional people so racist? Yea I said it...
This is what I'm facing when I go to work. Yes!

I'm afraid many (most?) Aussie men are pretty deeply stained with racism & sexism, from my experience. Well done on keeping a handle on it.

@firefall: I still find it disappointing when I'm faced with this, I don't approach people of other background thinking they're racist or even have racist thoughts if my own...
*Sigh*

hmm to put up with the Men yes definitely, not my cuppa tea!
I wish I had a photo of his face it really was something of a mess.

first of all.. that's not professional.

put up the yellow tape, talk to some business commission and no regrets.

he's done it to others, he needs investigating and his license pulled.

What a jerk. Of course his ancestors probably weren't from Brisbane, more likely convicts 😉

@Justlilyg: but you do get paid?
Peppa · 31-35, F
@Onecharmingman: I get paid there's a set call out fee for any nurse... the agency take their cut but I still get the minimum. Even if I'm there 10mins.
SW-User
@Justlilyg: even better, he would have had to pay an agency much more than he would have paid you 🙂

We had a mouthy black American girl working with us and she couldn't shut up about how stupid Canada is and how there's way too many white people. We fired her and sent her back across the border.

Ok.

@Justlilyg: My point is at least the guy you mentioned was trying to make conversation. It's not exactly racist to ask where a person's family originated from. I can understand your reluctance to discuss it seeing as you're native to your current country. He could have chosen a better topic.

@LucyRocks: seems he's fascinated with colour and racism that's the first thing he talks about when he meets a new nurse. A polish girl came in to observe as she's learning. He then told us an inappropriate story about a black friend of his that went there for a conference, and when he lost his bag a lady called the hotel he was staying at apparently he sounded more white than he looked and went on to say to him, I have your bag and I'm happy to drop at your hotel but the strange thing is your photo your face has been blackened...
The girl went bright red and I was in complete and utter shock over what he was saying and even repeating this story. So no it wasn't lucky he just likes being in authority and making others uncomfortable in his presence. The poor girl was reduced to explaining away the comment as if it was her.
I quickly said to her it's OK. She left shortly afterwards.
