@ajoite: I understand your concern and find myself in a similar position. This is the approach I take in dealing with this situation:
Some friends that I disagree with are okay with others disagreeing with them as long as the disagreement is expressed in a civil manner. As indicated in my original reply, that's something I always try to do. There are other friends, however, that I'm less certain about in terms of their ability to handle opposing viewpoints, no matter how they're expressed. With them, I'll generally avoid discussing known areas of disagreement and focus on those areas where we are in agreement and on common interests that we share.
