I really do. It is called Dissociative Identity Disorder. It is however rather rare. About 1 in 2000 in the US. We are talking distinct very different personalities not moods.

do you know when its going to change?
annamarie65 · 56-60, F
@LindaM: not sure what you mean by when is it going to change...once you have it, you have it, it doesnt change. you go to a specialist, you get diagnosed, and you get treated for it. it doesnt get better or go away, the treatment merely covers it up so you can more easily deal with the problem.

@annamarie65: i imagine it is tough to deal with sometimes...
annamarie65 · 56-60, F
@LindaM: I dont know how it is, personally...but I have studied a number of people who have had it, and the case studies are horrifying at times...
@LindaM: not usually until after it happens if I catch it at all. I know today I am not who I was just last night and that is a very strange thing. I am saying things I usually would not and getting into arguments yet usually fear conflict. There is more to the change but that is a little. Today rather than Carla I am behaving like the one I have always called Sara. I still need lots of therapy. Lol

@Temperance: that is scary, temperance...so i take it you have seen a specialist and been diagnosed? if you want to talk about it further we could go private rather than in an open forum...i know most people dont want to discuss such things amongst strangers...
LindaM · 61-69, F
@Temperance: aww well dont feel bad i need lots of therapy too...lol..hugs!
@annamarie65: it is horrifying to live with. Especially the dissociative amnesia. Over the past year or two it has been severe due to overwhelming stressors.
@LindaM: thanks
annamarie65 · 56-60, F
@Temperance: have you told your physician how bad it is? have you been keeping a notebook detailing each time it happens, and the severity of it?
@annamarie65: i think she meant when you have a personality shift.
LindaM · 61-69, F
@Temperance: you are welcome
annamarie65 · 56-60, F
@Temperance: a personality shift isnt the same as having a split personality
@annamarie65: yes I try to keep a journal. This site is helpful in being able to go back and see how I responded to comments and conversations I have jad. Sometimes I write then later am floored to see what I said. Mortified at times and that scares me. I have a psychiatrist and he is great. I have a good therapist a liscenced psychologist but no money or insurance so have not been able to see her for a while. It is tough to be your own therapist no matter how introspective you try to be.
@annamarie65: i have a bunch of identities or personalities. Am still trying to figure out how many. I had a male identity who is gone now and I am trying to adjust without that major part of my psyche.
annamarie65 · 56-60, F
i totally understand...it is a great help if you can see how many identities you have, kind of like dissecting a frog in biology...you can put labels on each personality, and that will help you more easily to track them and understand them better. and in doing thus you may be able to suppress the less desirable of them
@annamarie65: that is what I have been working on. I really need my therapist to help me. I think I have one that wants me dead and that really scares me. I have attempted suicide twice in my life.
annamarie65 · 56-60, F
oh wow, that is not good at all...there has to be some kind of program that will help you at a reduced rate. i know there are walk in clinics that help people for free or reduced rate ...it is something you may wish to look into.
