Is it okay to search your child's room, to make sure they aren't doing anything you don't want them to do?

Hmmm... fine line here ... I think just random searches would be an invasion of privacy, but if there are concerns backed by strong indicators then it's not only okay, but probably a parent's responsibility to take some kind of action, including searching any part of their house.

You have to assume there is contraband there until proven otherwise

@TexChik: Although exercised very rarely, our parents always made it clear that they had the right to look in anything, under anything, behind anything anywhere in their house and that included our rooms. And they insisted on knowing the passwords to our phones and to this day my mom can always see where I am by looking up my phone from hers (I can also see where she is and where dad is or my bro).

Lol, I remember when our phone carrier had labeled EP as an "adult" site and blocked it from my phone (about a year after I had joined). I was 18 at the time and I had to go to mom&dad and ask them to remove the adult filter from my data plan. 馃槼

@sarabee1995: im sure you needed extra seeing after... 馃槈

@TexChik: Lol, I explained what EP was and why I used it and acknowledged that there was a lot of junk there, but that wasn't what I was there for. They said okay and removed the filter.

@sarabee1995: Hahahaha!

@sarabee1995: make it back up to the ski lodge?

@TexChik: that is such an American way to look at it 馃槀
TexChikF
@Soccerstar: since I am American , what the hell is wrong with that?
Footballstar26-30, M
@TexChik: the guilty until proven innocent idea is just not right
TexChikF
@Soccerstar: as long as a child I am responsible for lives under my roof , I'm going to make sure nothing has filtered into my home that I am opposed to.
Footballstar26-30, M
@TexChik: so you just assume that your child is up to no good instead of being in line?

@Soccerstar: nope just making sure it's all good . Some of my son's friends have been found with pot, cigarettes , razor blades, and lighters . If I do find anything I will discuss with my child how there are things that are not ok to have ... and I'll explain why.
Footballstar26-30, M
Razor blades? Seriously? A teenager with razor blades lets assume it's for no good and not just og I don't know shaving?!?
TexChikF
@Soccerstar: hiw about an 8 year old , and No one shaves with scraper razor blades...
Footballstar26-30, M
If an 8 year old can get hold of those things then it's time to either move or rethink how youre being a parent
TexChikF
@Soccerstar: you're an ass. When you get farther away from being a child in life ... maybe you'll be able to converse like an adult
Footballstar26-30, M
I'm just not as ass. Just going to say nobody I know, or knows anybody, has been able to get their hands on weed, cigarettes, razor blades, etc at the age of 8. There is something seriously wrong there
sarabee199526-30, F
@Soccerstar: No, I don't think my parents assumed that I was up to no good at all. Instead, then were providing a "safe" environment for me. I don't think I suffered at all for having to go to them to get permission to access adult sites. My mom has always been willing to talk to me about anything. As for it being "such an American way" to look at it, well there's no surprise there since I am an American. Is having "such an American way" to look at something a bad thing?

@TexChik: No, I haven't. They've been bugging me to come up, but I stayed home all of last week and if course I work in weekends. I guess I'm "expected" to show up this week. Idk... maybe I'll go up tomorrow.

Sorry Sarah I said those things to tex probably should have tagged her. I agree completely with your original post

@DaneeK: Thanks Danee!

@Soccerstar: You're kidding right? Age 8... third grade, right? Absolutely I knew kids that tried to smoke by then. And by 4th grade there were kids that knew about and tried weed and certainly some who were drinking. Razor blades?? Idk, no idea.
sarabee199526-30, F
@Soccerstar: Then why are you arguing? I think she agreed with me as well??
