If someone intentionally damaged your property, would you be more likely to call the police, or to fight them?

Fight them. Civil justice is the only proper way. I know some will disagree with me but the majotlrity of the time the police don't care, they write it down in their diary and that's that.

Sometimes the police ain't enough to teach someone a thing or two about respect. That's why sometimes people who lose their morals need them slapped back in again.
