Sympathy. People usually keep a lot of things hidden because they don't really want to be an inconvenience to someone. My life is a never-ending shitstorm anyway, so I can handle the things they choose to share. Showing a little sympathy can mean a lot to someone else that wouldn't otherwise ask for it
