@crossproduct: I see. I feel it depends on the person to whom you are telling the lie, and why, and what the lie is. I feel there are times when the truth can only destroy the day for the person hearing it. At times like that, a small lie to postpone the truth, until a more appropriate time, is not only acceptable, but desirable.

I would be angry and hurt if someone did that to me, and unlikely to trust anything they said from that point onward, and it would seriously damage any kind of relationship between them and me.
It offends me more than a self-serving or malicious lie would, because at least people using those don't think they're doing good by it.
