What is this caused from?

Sometimes I'll wake up in the night gasping for air. I tried to breathe in and can't very good then I cough and cough it takes a couple minutes to clear away, it's so scary. Back when I smoked weed I thought maybe it was just a spasm, now i don't smoke and still do it occasionally. Then I wondered if it was saliva going down my lungs when I snore. I've been told I snore really bad. And yes, someday I'm going to the doctor to be seen for all kinds of different stuff so I don't need to be told that. I just want to know what it is, or if it is a symptom of sleep apnea

It sounds like sleep apnea. you need to mention it to your doctor immediately because you could stop breathing in your sleep

And that’s horrific for your brain because everytime you stop breathing your brain isn’t getting oxygen and your neurons die and those aren’t capable of regeneration like other cells

Question are you very tired during the day??

very much so. If you are a bit overweight and smoking, throwing that in is very bad for your heart. The treatment is simple and reversible... Get a sleep study, and if prescribed a CPAP use it. Still try to lose some weight and stop smoking (if you are). You will feel much better.

Sounds like sleep apnea. Best to see a doc though.

Edit - Oops, someone already said this. Sorry 😁

Sounds like a apnea event to me. Kind of important to deal with for several reasons.
