What's a proper way to answer to an "I love you" from a friend?

I want you to take in consideration gender roles, that the people are of opposite sex.
I personally never know how to answer to that, to not shift any boundaries, even though I'd like to say it back 'cause I love my friends too. Actually you know what, thats how I normally answer, by saying general stuff like, I love my friends too, or everyone loves you too, or we all love u too, or just say nothing and continue the convo about whatever we were talking about.
I just feel like there is something better to say on a personal level, from a guy to a girl and it to be seamless.

Telling someone you love them is a direct kindness. So rare. If someone told me they loved me, I’d be ecstatic. I definitely would not try to avoid the sentiment for any reason.

@BrokenAbyss what would u say is a good reply from a man in your opinion?
@Dan193 If he said, aw I love you too, that would sound great to me. It doesn’t have to be creepy at all, or insinuating, really…

It’s okay to say I love you, it’s okay to show you care.

@BrokenAbyss thanks, it's good to know

I don't say "I love you" to any friend.
Those three words are too heavy for me.
Love means love.
If a girl tells me she loves me, she'll find herself in a romantic situation.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@rrraksamam so how would u reply?
rrraksamam · 31-35, M
@Dan193 I love you too. Let's get married?

@rrraksamam Yep I'm the same. I would find it awkward.

I think your answers are proper.
In my culture it's a thing to address them as "brother"or "sister" to emphasize the non-romantic nature of the friendship.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@SW-User yeah, but I think that diminishes the recognition of the bond in a way, like it being its own beautiful thing, that was built over time and not something we were born with, you know what I mean
SW-User
Interesting. For us it's the opposite.
Siblings are family. They are often the closest people to one's heart.
@Dan193
@SW-User same in our culture 😂
I love me too if you're not comfy reciprocating
@Dan193 I could say it back to one, but generally I'd be a smartass 😆

@BeefySenpie Did you guys read Ouran High manga? It's there LMAO hahhaa. The female protagonist wanted to confess but the male lead was a narcissist so she was worrying herself on what his response would be. She had good reason to believe he'll just say "i love me too."
XD
@Casheyane No, but maybe I'm senpie for a reason 🤣

Often on websites I doubt the sincerity. Especially on newer acquittances at best.

For me love has a time component, a gender component, as well as a relationship type of component.

So the very definition of love is far too broad in the English language. Some even on this post have come close to saying it when they mention family or partners or friends.

There truly is many types of love. So how should the phrase "I love you" be taken?

It's this unclarity that I find uncomfortable with. And that can only be judged over time when not explicitly stated.

So when some say love, yet really mean the Latin equivalent of "agape" yet say it like the greek version of "agapo", I have some serious problems with that. The two are two different languages and mean two different things.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@DeWayfarer aw I love you too
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Dan193 and there you go. Because I really don't know you at all! 🤷🏻‍♂️

So I have to assume it as insincerity.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@DeWayfarer I know, I just think I'll go with that, for friends
Krysclear · 31-35, F
I always tell friends I love them. It’s the ultimate show of respect and loyalty
GLITTER · 36-40, F
Stop being gay you gaylord

That would be my exact reaction and they would know it means I love you too
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@GLITTER haha
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Maybe just a smile or pat them in the head/shoulder (whatever works) haha. Idk. For girl peers, it isn't an issue. But I guess it could be seen differently coming from the opposite gender. Maybe say 'Thanks. I care about you as a friend too' or something like that.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@Casheyane thanks. Is it important to say the word friend, or not?
Casheyane · 31-35, F
@Dan193 Your call. In a sense, adding the word 'friend' kinda gives off the I'm friendzoning you vibe so better not haha.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@Casheyane yeah, I was thinking the same too. I dont wanna do that
Fluffybull · F
I've never had a friend who said "I love you". I wouldn't feel obliged to say that back if I were you, if you don't feel comfortable saying so.
Ontheroad · M
One good response would be something like "I love you like a sister, I'd do anything for you" or something of that nature.
eMortal · M
“I love you too, goofy ball”
“I love you too, muddy head”
“I love you too, princess”
Etc.
Well I would fall for it because I catch feelings easily. 🤪
SW-User
I just say it back if I genuinely do love that person
SW-User
Idk, horrible person
SW-User
Move in for a kiss

Ha ha

Just kidding

I love you too

Hopefully the framework will have already been set with the boundaries of the relationship already firmly in place
