Yes. To some extent. This is normal behavior, I think, but exacerbated with white people due to liberally-enforced white guilt. Pretty much the worst thing you can be as a white person is racist. So, white people are anxious about being labelled so.

In my experience, black people/Mexicans/whatever race tend to do the same thing, just more muted. Except maybe Asians. I worked at UPS as a driver helper with this one black dude, older man, and he would bring up enjoying movies with white actors. So, I brought up Denzel Washington. It's just this way to clear the air, so you both know that you're okay with one another and aren't a threat.

Though, with younger black dudes, they most often don't feel the need to prove they're not racist, I think. Sometimes, though. And they also generally give white people the benefit of the doubt. They don't just default see all white people as racist, whereas older black guys who experienced real racism tend to be anxious around white people until they really know where they stand.

I was also working in the hub with this one black dude, and I would bring up rap artists and he would bring up rock and metal bands. It was pretty awkward, but cool. Both of us were attempting to come to an understanding by attempting to share interests we thought the other had.

So, yeah.
