One of my friends said all of their friends have it and it’s 'very common.' Seems concerning

I've it ever since returning home from Vietnam. I was airborne infantry. Also have a lot of hearing loss, direct, sustained exposure to agent orange in the jungle and was wounded in an explosion from schrapnel. I am V.A. rated at 100 % permanently and totally disabled.

@Carissimi Thank you kindly dear lady.

Yep, for something like 50 years - got it from gun and artillery fire in Vietnam and it has gotten slowly but inexorably worse over the years. For the last 15 years it ahs affected daily life. I can't even enjoy being out because I can't hear the words of the person sitting across the table from me. Any background noise, plus the tinnitus makes it impossible for me to understand the words. Tinnitus is no fun.

Thank you for your service. @Ontheroad

No, I don't have it and consider myself very fortunate in that regard. It is pretty common, as you said.
Aidan · 26-30, F
I didn’t know it was so common, but now I do. @Rutterman
I can pretty much ignore it most of the time. I do use a white noise generator at night which helps (and also helps cover up other noise). This is it, the Marpac Dohm.

I have had it since I became deaf in my left ear at 11. Very irritating. And playing guitar in rock bands didn't help.
Piper · 61-69, F
No, and I am grateful for that. I didn't realize it was "'very' common", though.
Aidan · 26-30, F
@Piper I didn’t either
Piper · 61-69, F
@Aidan It seems to be a lot more common than I realized, according to your friend saying all their friends have it.

Too much loud music in my ears. You panic at first, but after a while it gets less obtrusive.
SatanBurger · 36-40, FVIP
Yup I have it all the time. I don't know what causes it, I've tried figuring it out and had tests but oh well.
Fortunately I don’t have it. I know someone who has it though. Not fun to deal with.
TrunkZ · 56-60, M
Yes. Due to an inner ear condition
Carissimi · F
Occasionally.
@Jabulani One theory is that as you age and lose the ability to hear high-pitched sounds, your brain fills in the gap with tones at the same frequency.
@LeopoldBloom Thank you for showing me. it's certainly valuable info.
Glassysky · 26-30, M
No.
Depends on the age honestly
Aidan · 26-30, F
I don’t think so. My friend is only 30 and their friends are young too. @Glassysky
