There are stages I'd say.
1. acceptance/recognition,
2. amends/forgiveness
3. backlash/overcorrection
4. mirrored amends/forgiveness
&
5. mutual empathy and full inclusion
Put down the guns and bring it in for a hug.

Some people should know better than to carry a gun. Like the guy that shot the clerk in subway wasn't supposed to be carrying a gun in the first place but still shouldn't have if had been allowed to because he is hot tempered. People can be really irresponsible and lack common sense. Not only did he kill someone but his life is pretty much over too. @exchrist
