Caerphilly's market traders worried about their future after council buys their market to turn into offices and flats

"We had a feeling something was up, but when we were actually told, it was a shock," he said. "It made me feel a bit sick." Leigh, who is from Pontypridd, has been repairing shoes in Caerphilly for 43 years. He said if the plan goes ahead outlined, it would see him packing his toolkit up for good.

Leigh said: "There's no way we can afford to trade in a town centre shop, the rates are too high. There's talk from the council about possibly putting us somewhere in shipping containers, but try moving my equipment, it's about a tonne in weight. If this does shut, I'm gone. I wouldn't do this again and it's gutting. I'm not sure what I'd do next as this is all I've done since I left school, but I'm also too young to retire."

I'm not saying this is the best Market in the world however Caerphilly Council does this without consulting anyone another part of the town centre has been sold off in Park Lane for a Hotel to be built instead it could of been put to better use as a second much needed carpark for shoppers shame on Caerphilly Council consult local people before doing bad things.

@1234cardiff Cardiff In-Door Market is doing very well it's always worth visiting when shopping in Cardiff and Newport In-Door Market was closed for years because it under-went a total re-fit I think that took three years I haven't visited it since it's been opened but understand it's worth a visit, sadly Caerphilly Market seems doomed the building needs a great deal of work I'll watch that space and hope it turns out Ok in the end. Ps Cardiff In-Door Market has a great web site look it up it's hear to stay it was originally Cardiff Jail.
@senghenydd Newport Market is now dominated by a huge pub on the ground floor.
Take out a mortgage if you want a pint!
It is damned expensive!

@TheSirfurryanimalWales 🇺🇦🌻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 sounds like just my place... high prices keep out the riffraff.
@Yulianna yeah...There must be lots of rich people in Newport.
It’s very busy there.
I’ll stick to Wetherspoons!
But if you are ever in Newport pop in😀

@TheSirfurryanimalWales I haven't visited the newly refurbished Newport Market yet, been in Newport a couple of times lately but a fair distance from the market I must have a look at it shortly.
