Can a debt collector take my car with a lien on it over unpaid medical bills?

Long story short I had breast tumors removed and with that about $1500-$2000 in medical debt. Can't afford to pay it right now but got sent a debt collector letter. Preschool classroom aide.

No, they're not authorized to do so but the medical bills will remain on your credit for 2-7 years but they just passed a law starting in the first half of 2023, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion will no longer include medical debt in collections under $500 on credit reports

FYI if you pay your medical bills it will restart the clock if not it will fall off your credit after 2-7 years

@Souls I have never seen any medical debts on my credit report. I think that's a myth used to scare people into paying.

@RedBaron medical debt is not on your credit report. Late payment causing debt collection is.

@RedBaron The 3-4 points that Souls made are dead on the money.

@Adogslife What works, and many people don’t know this, is that if you dispute negative items on your report, the creditors rarely respond and they get removed, even if they are accurate. It’s easy to improve your credit score quickly and for free.

@RedBaron also true.
