Google Vivian Thomas. He (yes, he) was a black, high school educated janitor at Vanderbilt hospital and later John’s Hopkins Hospital. He basically invented heart surgery. It’s an astounding story of a brilliant man who, in the Jim Crow era bested some of the finest surgeons alive. He partnered with Dr Alfred Blalock and Dr Helen Tausig to save blue babies who suffered from a condition called tetralogy of Fallot.
