Canada protects pedophile identities. Why can't we have a public registry like the states have?

Would you feel safer, really ?
Especially when you consider most paedophiles are folk known to you or your child ?
I mean, that's how they get close to youngsters anyway.
It's one of those horrible questions isn't it ?
