Canada protects pedophile identities. Why can't we have a public registry like the states have?

The identity may not be protected in the US, but one has to actively look for the information and sign up for alerts, if available in your area. Many people do not continually check, just to make sure that there are no persons of concern in the area, especially given the recidivism rate among pedophiles is very high.
