"Mentally ill" is a huge, very limiting label that lumps a lot of different things together, some of which are much worse than others. It's the kind of term that dehumanizes people by turning them into labels instead of people. You might want to frame it in terms that are more specific to her actual, direct behaviors and issues. That way she can seem more like an actual person to you, instead of a label and a burden.
