It's not necessary, but if you wish to study science, it's must.

Russians, Japanese and Germans study science in their language and they are doing pretty well.

@ragingfire: Notice how all of those scientists speak English. It's not that they need English to learn science, but rather to communicate with other scientists from all over the world. They just made English the international language.
