Be there for your kid. Love them no matter what. No kid is perfect and they can't do everything you did. Embrace that.
Encourage them to pursue what they like. Participate with them even for a bit even if you don't like it.
Freedom should be given to them to eat as they choose. They shouldn't be bound by your life choices. They should be given a chance to like anything.
Be frank to them. Talk to them and get to know them. Not all days will be good for you but they see you as a role model they care about.
Don't drink or smoke. It's hard but they get hurt too and don't beat them up for small blunders.
In the end, love them no matter what. Don't treat them like options.

@Beatbox34 I can relate to this, my dad wasn't the father he should have been. When I have kids I will be the complete oposite of him because I wouldn't want them to go through what I did. Great post.
