My father was a writer, and I'm a published non-fiction writer myself. I think the best way to explain the compulsion to write is that writers possess both a deep love of language and the imagination to come up with stories to tell, information to impart, or subjects/issues to be investigated. When you have both of those things, the desire -- the need -- to write comes naturally.
Most writers don't make much of a living from it, which should be an indication of just how strong the compulsion to write is. Most of us have other jobs, such as teaching, which is what I do. My father was a newspaper editor.

They have to obviously have a gift for being able to pen their thoughts/ imaginations/ ideas in an engaging way.
I always think something like that is a calling.

@Unlearn For the writer it's satisfaction of being able to share all that is there in their soul/heart for the audience. And they make money off it.
Haha, I don't know yet. It's been suggested many times, I'm very resistant to it right now.🙃

@SW-User you come across as a curious and observant person...both qualities are desirable in a writer.

@Unlearn I have it in me to write. I'm just resisting it for some reason. If the calling comes, it comes one day and I might get there.

Loving the act of writing so much that you can't live without it. You feel compelled to journal and jot down impressions of everything. Sketches of poems and short stories come naturally and easily to you.
