My friend never calls should I care about him?

I would call him, I am a bit like your mate at times, I make little effort, but that's coz ive not been too great.
I have a few good friends that will always see if I'm ok

Doesn't really matter if people think you should or shouldn't. If you care, you care. If you don't, you don't.
If you care, and it really is a friend, try to understand why this happened.
Otherwise, move on

If you care you care. If you don’t you don’t. It’s okay either way. I’m glad you have friends who do care enough to call. I tend to invest in friends I hear from.
