Just what is a Redneck?

I see that moniker applied to a great deal of the white American population but not sure what it really means.

Is it the equivalent of calling an African-American male a "Thug" or is it more in line with calling them ghetto-trash?
One definition I've read says "redneck" origins were in West Virginia southern coalfields where the coal minors fought for the right to unionize.
