White people evolved because when humans moved north those with too much melanin would end up with vitamin D deficiency and were more likely infertile.
(Exceptions - Inuit have high vitamin D diet.)

Those who lived in areas with high UV light tended to survive with more melanin because excess UV can make us infertile.
