Being a quiet person, I run across that a lot.
Most times those that do that are the type that feel they should be loved by all.
It makes them feel threatened if you're not like the rest, so they goad you, attempting to get you to talk.
They'd hate to be seen as quiet like you, that's scary. So they think it's an insult that'll get you talking.

Because some people they take that offensively. Like if they're pushing your buttons and you don't pay attention to them and ignore them. Like you're not acknowledging them.

Exactly what I think @Miram but surely there’s a difference between being stupid and thinking you are not scared
