Can u cure racism in someone? Or will they be like that forever?

curiosi · 61-69, F
Stop talking about it, wont go away as long as the sheep continue to fan the flames.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@curiosi yeah, but I mean in one person, how could u get them to not be anymore?
curiosi · 61-69, F
@Dan193 Can't get anyone to do anything. We can watch ourselves as we feed off of each other.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@curiosi Hm that's an interesting concept.

Are they willing to hear reasonable arguments, and get information from various sources?

@Dan193 Cool, that's where you should get started. Sometime people don't know what they don't know, and plenty of former racists, are now social justice advocates. For some, the inevitable break with their family and friends is the scariest consequence.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Only governments keep it alive
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@MrBrownstone yeah, but I mean if u take a specific person that has racism inclinations, how do you help them to change?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Dan193 Good question. Hard to undo ignorance.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
Most will be like that forever unless something happens that changes them. Like there's ex Nazis out there who can talk from their perspective but from my knowledge it's just what it is.

It's like curing a prejudice against gay people. I'm not sure you can.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@SatanBurger I see, that what I was afraid of. Like having a handicap for life.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Dan193 If they're open to discussion, it wouldn't be bad to try. If you go into the conversation with no expectations to change anyone's mind but just to have an honest conversation, you're still doing something. Don't force it though, I would just know secretly that I got to contradict some of their viewpoints so they'll think about it at least instead of staying in the old echo chamber.

Like that forever
Dan193 · 31-35, M
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
I think you can, but the person will need to be removed from the culture that caused it in the first place
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@ozgirl512 true, however a lot of that learnt behaviour is triggered automatically, and it's mostly emotional triggers. Maybe even formed a belief system around it.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
@Dan193 they can be unlearnt... Are you still scared of the things that scared you as a child?
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@ozgirl512 yeah
NightGalleries · 26-30, M
Love can conquer hate but most racists have been raised their whole lives like that takes alot of effort and things to change.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@NightGalleries That's good, that is not unchangeable, but I still don't know how. Maybe with time, like @curiosi said.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Some people can change, but it should be taken into regard there's degrees of racism. The world isn't split into "not racist" and "neo-nazi". You get casual bigotry and covert racism that goes under the radar. All of these needs to be addressed for racism to actually be stopped.
Dan193 · 31-35, M
@basilfawlty89 so how do u actually stop it, after u address all of this covert racism?
