I don't understand

How could you have a great friend or really close friend here but you guys have no alternative means of communication and if suddenly something happened and this person left the site, you'll never know what really happened.

That happens in person too though. One of my jobs, I deal with elderly people. They try to keep tabs on each other because no one else is going to. After a certain amount of time, your friends just die off and no one can tell you whatever became of them. Or sometimes they don't die off; they go to live somewhere else, like with family. But family doesn't know their friends and doesn't inform them. Seems like a normal thing for people to just fall out of one's life out of the blue like that. Even the young.
